Case study: Abel Tasman National Park
Restoration: next step in the evolution of managing our marine and coastal resources…
Restoration often starts with islands: In this case study we will look at Adele Island in the Abel Tasman National Park (ATNP) pictured above and the nearby coastal environment.
Whereas reserves are places where we are allowing nature to take its course (by removing the negative impact of humans) we are now seeing a more hands on approach to helping nature ‘fix’ things.
Questions
How does restoration differ from protection (via no take / no modify)?
Why Islands?
The work going on in the ATNP is showing a new way to approach conservation. In the past that work was largely left to the Dept. of Conservation (DoC), but in this area there is a partnership between the community and Doc. It started with a group of locals (the Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust) doing pest control and planting. More recently the conservation and restoration efforts have been supported by funding from a philanthropic NZ family trust: Project Janszoon.
Task
Use the Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust and the Project Janszoon websites (and other links below) to figure out what each of the images shows. Then you will be able to report on the restoration project being done in the Abel Tasman.

The brown things are dead pine trees, the bright green plants are Hakea, an Australian invader.
What is the problem with plants like these?
Hakea is a particularly nasty pest, what adaptations does it have that makes it such a problem?

This image shows lots of gorse growing in the coastal regions of the park.... no one is doing anything about that!
Is there a reason why gorse is allowed to grow but pines are not?
