Not that long ago NZ's marine resources were pretty much up for grabs... if you could go out and catch it, then it was yours. This was true for fish and crayfish and, maybe surprisingly, whales.
The video above (no sound) was filmed in Cook St in the last years of whaling in NZ.
In contrast to that approach, when a whale strands today it is treated quite differently.
